The Power of Language

The Power of Language image

From La Sorbonne to MythosU, Dr. Leccia brings a personal connection to exploring the relationship between language, culture, and identity.

I was born and raised on the outskirts of Mulhouse, France, in the Alsace region, which borders Germany and Switzerland. Both of my parents traveled from Lyon to Mulhouse following the liberation at the end of World War II in search of work and decided to stay. Growing up in the aftermath of World War II, I witnessed the resilience of my community. The remnants of the war were still visible, but so too were the signs of progress and hope that characterized post-war Europe.

From a young age, I was captivated by languages and the power they held. The streets of Mulhouse resounded with the mingling of French, German, and Alsatian dialect. It was a symphony of linguistic diversity that reflected the region's complex history and rich cultural interplay. It was this rich milieu that sparked my interest in the field of linguistics..

My education in France further nurtured my passion for linguistic exploration. I pursued my studies with fervor, ultimately obtaining a PhD in Linguistics from the renowned Sorbonne University in Paris. The rigorous academic environment, coupled with the intellectual stimulation provided by my professors, solidified my commitment to this field of research.

However, it was my journey to the United States that truly shaped the focus of my work. Drawn by academic opportunities and the chance to collaborate with esteemed scholars, I accepted the position at Mythos University. The cultural immersion and exposure to a diverse range of languages in the United States broadened my horizons and deepened my understanding of linguistic diversity.

My early experiences as an immigrant in a foreign land ignited a keen interest in second language acquisition and the challenges faced by individuals navigating the complexities of language and culture. I became deeply invested in exploring how language learning could serve as a bridge between communities, fostering understanding and facilitating social integration. This focus has guided my research and teaching endeavors throughout my career.

Currently, I am most excited about a project that examines the intersection of language and identity among immigrant communities. Through ethnographic interviews, linguistic analysis, and a thorough examination of personal narratives, my team and I aim to shed light on the complex relationship between language, culture, and identity. This project has the potential to inform policies and initiatives that aim to create inclusive environments that embrace linguistic diversity.

As I look to the future, I am filled with a sense of anticipation and determination. Building on the foundation of this endowed professorship, I plan to continue my research and mentor the next generation of linguists. I am particularly interested in exploring the application of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and natural language processing, to advance our understanding of language acquisition and communication. These cutting-edge tools hold immense potential for unraveling the complexities of language and transforming the way we study and interact with it.

Jaan Pterol

My path into musicology was deeply shaped by my upbringing in a small, culturally rich town nestled in the Appalachian foothills. Music wasn't just entertainment there; it was the fabric of daily life – from old-time fiddle tunes at community gatherings to gospel hymns in church, and the stories woven into every ballad. I saw firsthand how music preserved history, expressed identity, and built bridges between generations. This immersive experience ignited my fascination with music not just as an...
