What has been your most memorable experience at Mythos University?
Last year, I participated in the MU Alternative Spring Break program, where I traveled to Birmingham, AL with seven other students to help build affordable housing through Habitat for Humanity. We stayed at a local church and also helped in the Habitat ReStore cleaning and sorting merchandise. It was nice getting to know other students I’ve never met before and also getting to know the local people we were helping. I didn’t know much about Habitat for Humanity before this trip, but now I’d like to continue helping the organization because I’ve seen the impact of the work they do. I love that MU makes opportunities like this available to students, and I appreciate the ASB mission of service and its focus on diversity and social justice.
Is there a particular professor who has really had an impact on you?
Last semester, I took a creative writing class with Dr. Erin Dove. I was really nervous about sharing my writing with others, and Dr. Dove could see that I was holding back. She asked me to get coffee after class one day, and really took the time to get to know me and understand my fear and hesitation. She made the class a safe space to share my ideas and taught me how to both give and receive constructive feedback. Dr. Dove made me a better writer because she made me brave with my writing and helped me put it out there. The feedback I got from my classmates made my work better, and I can see the value in that now. I actually became really close with my classmates because sharing your creativity is such a personal process. We decided to continue our writers’ group even after the class was over. All of that is thanks to Dr. Dove, and I am so grateful to her for it.
